Find Your Joy with Yoga
eluroom means 'joy of life' in Estonian and I created the brand so I could share with you how I find joy. From dressing to yoga and all the things we can do on a day to day basis to raise our mood.
Why Yoga?
I have practiced yoga from the age of about 7 when my mum took me to a class. It wasn't until I had children I appreciated and embraced the mindset of yoga. The contentment and joy that comes from the practice. Yes I was the one who used skip out of class before savasana after I had done what I viewed as a series of stretches. Yoga is my salvation as I navigate life. I love it so much I trained to be a yoga teacher and it is one of the most rewarding things I do. I love sharing in the energising and uplifting experience that comes from the practice.
When I tell people I am a teacher the first thing they will say is 'I am not very flexible' or 'I am not very good at yoga'. Let's dispel these myths, you don't need to be flexible we are all different and while you see images or 'yoga porn' of incredibly agile bodies in seemingly impossible poses this is not the norm. Secondly it is not something you can be good or bad at, there are many different forms and it's finding what works for you at any given time, knowing that this can change.
The Benefits
Yoga is not just about striking a pose or getting a good workout. It is a holistic practice that combines physical postures, breathing techniques, meditation, and mindfulness to promote overall well-being.
Group practice can be a wonderful way to share in a collective energy and spend time with like minded people, however sometimes we want a few minutes to reset and recharge. Roll out a mat and find a quiet space. I have plenty of examples on my YouTube channel.
When the boys were small there was little time for exercise and yoga, I mean the luxury of and hour class?! I wish. From what I knew of the practice I was able to start the day with a sun salutation, throughout the day I could weave in some other poses to stretch away the aches and find some inner peace.
I say there is 'always somewhere to go' with a yoga pose but not only this there is an evolution of your practice. It can shift from something dynamic like a vinyasa flow to something restorative like yin.
Once you know a few poses you can have them in your 'tool box'. high shoulders? Try a cat/cow. Stiff hips? Try lizard pose.
Yoga helps to get rid of the 'I'm getting old' mindset, as our bodies change take the opportunity to try something new. Yoga offers a connection to your body and helps with self regulation as we connect breath with movement. Did you know there is only one other form of exercise that does this? Marathon running and I know what I would much rather do.
Remember, yoga is a personal journey, so don't compare yourself to others. Listen to your body, breathe deeply, and enjoy the process. With time and practice, you'll discover the magic of yoga and find your joy.
If you want to feel better, tackle aches and pains, improve flexibility, improve mental health and cognition, yoga is a marvellous panacea.
