Don't Lose Sleep Over Style
Racing, racing, racing...thoughts. Does anyone else ever experience a mental marathon between the hours of 1-4 am? All too often, a relentless onslaught of ideas, worries, and fears can show up when we're just trying to sleep. For whatever reason, our brains decide this would be a fabulous time to worry about and try to solve our biggest problems. It can feel like a never-ending carousel spinning round and round in our heads...and it's exhausting!
Well, we learned why this happens and, for what it's worth, it actually helped us put things in perspective.
The Science Behind the Midnight Madness
The fight-or-flight part of our brains, the amygdala, processes emotions like fear, anxiety, and aggression. And, it never sleeps. It's always turned on! But, the prefrontal cortex, the rational, problem-solving part of our brain, is deactivated at night. It has super slow brain waves while we sleep. So, we literally can't make sense of worrisome issues because we don't have the ability to rationalise. It's like trying to drive a car that has an engine but no steering wheel. So, while the racing thoughts might continue to show up, you can try convincing yourself that you'll be better equipped to deal with them in the morning. Try to show these annoying thought patterns the door until you (and your brain) are fully awake.
Try this before you go to sleep have a mental run through of the day checking off all of the things you did (you will be surprised at how much you achieved) so to yourself 'thank you - well done' if you got stuck on anything or forgot something mentally file it say to yourself 'I will sort this out tomorrow'. Doing this works two fold. firstly you are celebrating all you did and giving the brain dopamine hit and setting up a path for when the monkey mind gets busy as you can return to the 'I will sort this out tomorrow'.
Let me know if it works!
